Islands have very low utility as they are usually quite small and have few resources. The are usually quite safe places to land as they have a very small spawn list which is only comprised of Dodos and Carbonemys.

Not all small clusters of blocks at the water's surface are considered islands by the game. When you are at an actual Island, the player HUD will say "Normal Island" in the top left of the screen. Islands are only found in Deep Ocean; clumps of surface blocks in the River biome will still say "River" on the HUD.
